Why Healthy Skepticism —and Independent Validation—Are Non-Negotiable in the Age of Generative AI

Earlier this week, Jason Koebler of 404 Media reported that two U.S. newspapers - the Chicago Sun-Times and The Philadelphia Inquirer - published a “Summer Reading List 2025” that was discovered to be full of recommended titles that simply do not exist. Apparently the list was created with the help of an AI tool by a freelance content supplier. Only five of the fifteen books were genuine, yet the feature still sailed through production and into weekend print editions.


How did the hallucinations pass muster? Both papers relied on a syndicated “special section” that was never fact-checked by their own editors. An internal review later confirmed that the third-party contractor had used AI to spin up copy and, crucially, no human bothered to verify the references before publication.


This is a textbook example of what economists call information asymmetry: the audience cannot easily distinguish authentic expertise from AI-generated pastiche, while the publisher lacks perfect oversight of every outsourced contributor. When that asymmetry widens, the market for trustworthy news—or corporate content, or marketing collateral—begins to unravel, imposing hidden costs on brands and eroding public confidence.


What Can You Do

It doesn't matter that this happened with a newspaper. We all use generative AI, and it can (and likely does) happen much more frequently than we want to admit. So, how do we make sure it doesn't continue?

  • Institute independent validation checkpoints. Before external copy, data, or AI-generated drafts go live, route them through a neutral reviewer like VeroVeri with a team to interrogate sources rigorously.

  • Demand source transparency from every contributor. Require footnotes, working links, and author contact details; then spot-check at least a sample. If a cited study or “expert” can’t be traced to a real institution, treat the whole asset as high-risk.

  • Benchmark the cost of errors. Quantify retraction expenses, lost trust, or regulatory penalties versus the modest fee (or extra turnaround time) for proper validation; the ROI case for verification becomes self-evident when real numbers are on the table.


Generative AI is extraordinary at first drafts and awful at epistemic humility. It will hallucinate confidently, and busy people will always be tempted to accept a coherent-sounding paragraph at face value. Healthy skepticism - paired with methodical third-party verification - turns that risk into a manageable workflow rather than an existential threat.


The lesson from the fictitious-book fiasco is clear: in 2025, any organization that publishes unvalidated content bets its reputation on chance. A low-friction, objective review layer is fast becoming the price of admission to the marketplace of ideas.
